圖書名稱:The Shaping of Us: How Everyday Spaces Structure Our Lives, Behavior, and Well-being

內容簡介

The spaces we live in define identity, creativity, and sense of community, both in ways we see and in ways we don’t. Using insights from environmental psychology, design, and architecture, The Shaping of Us reveals how our surroundings influence our behavior and, in turn, our quality of life.

Lily Bernheimer explores how the design of our workplaces, including open floor plans and noise levels, affects our productivity and collaboration. She discusses the importance of the relationship between natural elements and psychological and physical health. She delves into pop culture phenomena that impact us, such as “the IKEA effect,” NIMBYism, and “ruin porn.”

Using case studies from around the world, Bernheimer shows how culture and nationality contribute to the design of our built environment. In the Netherlands woonerfs control traffic on residential streets, creating safer shared spaces. The prevalence of roundabouts in Britain and traffic signals in America signify cultural differences between the two countries. A study in Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park demonstrates how our perceptions of social norms affect our behavior, specifically whether we take fragments of petrified wood out of the park. What does Le Corbusier’s unrealized plan for a modernist Paris teach us? What can we learn from studies of high-density living among rats. Bernheimer discusses the future of affordable housing through the open source, customizable half-houses in Chile and the concept of the digitally fabricated WikiHouse.

The Shaping of Us demonstrates that the environments we inhabit define our identities, from the earliest moments of our evolution to the worlds we build for ourselves today. In understanding this more deeply, we can build environments that promote improved productivity, sustainable economies, and increased happiness and well-being.
